An He is a Chinese artist born in 1957 in Guangzhou. He arrived in the United States in 1985, settling in New York before making San Francisco his permanent home in 1988. Specialising in figurative painting, he is known for his romantic paintings of women. More here.

Haha! Funny you should say that because I’ve never learned to ride a bike. I’ve always wanted to but never got around to it. At some point it got to the stage where I felt too old to be learning to ride a bike, so I gave up the idea altogether. So in a way you could actually say I don’t have the courage to ride a bike… ☺

Only a man can paint women in this way, keeping that separation, that sense of distance. He clearly adores his model – I take it they are all of the same woman – and he captures perfectly those subtle changes of mood that go far beyond the choice of clothes or the backcloth. Very nice painter, though maybe not quite to my own taste: I much prefer his later work, though.
