You In My Thoughts

Painting of a bench

When I walk through the russet park

On a carpet of dying leafs

And come upon a deserted bench

Sprinkled with dew drops and rotting at the edges,

That’s when I think of you.

*

When it’s raining on the streets

And raindrops die upon the pavement

And I splash through muddy pools alongside strangers,

Holding above my head an umbrella broad enough for two,

That’s when I think of you.

*

When I dine in the evening,

Facing an empty chair, an empty glass, an empty plate,

Your dusty side of the table,

A dinner cooked out of necessity,

A candle dying out,

That’s when I think of you.

*

When I go to bed at night between cold sheets,

Hugging my pillow, thinking of ifs and of maybes and of mistakes,

Weeping myself to sleep,

That’s when I think of you.

And do you know that in my dreams a stranger plays my part?

He says the right things,

He does what I should have done,

He stops you when you try to run,

He makes you stay,

He wins your heart.

  1. Dabbing tears from my eyes. That’s so beautifully expressed, yet sad. I think that if the object of the poem were to read such heartfelt words, she might have second thoughts and give the relationship another go.

  2. Love this parts >> When I go to bed at night between cold sheets,

Hugging my pillow, thinking of ifs and of maybes and of mistakes,

    Weeping myself to sleep,

That’s when I think of you.
